Starting in August 2025, as part of the“Inclusion Lab” project, we have established dance, music, and movement classes at Mwambao special needs class in Bagamoyo. The focus of the classes is on fostering personal development, artistic expression, and technical skills. The technical aspect emphasizes building a detailed body image, cultivating a nuanced perception of one’s own body weight, and exploring the movement potential within available space.
Additionally, musical sensitivity is enhanced through the exploration of various movement qualities and rhythms. Participants are encouraged to develop their own artistic style – there is no initial predetermined framework, allowing for unique self-expression.
With the support of donations we could bring in different materials, like colorful scarves, a parachute, and rings. Moving with these objects helps expand the students’ movement repertoire, caters to individual abilities, and boosts confidence by shifting focus from just movement to engaging with the materials.
The classes integrate Tanzanian new and traditional, and Western modern and classical music, with opportunities to learn instruments, sing, and explore rhythms. Some of the artists are professional dancers in traditional Tanzanian dance styles. By learning the steps and rhythms, students can actively participate in traditional dance and are thereby integrated into their communities.
The use of props like scarves and parachutes, along with traditional dances, songs, and drumming, inspired teachers and students alike. Throughout the year, we continue sharing ideas and learning from each other. A collaborative project with young dancers in Berlin is already underway – more details soon!
