We jump in to support where it’s needed most urgently. In the past months, especially Salma and Rehema and their families needed extra support, and we are happy to see that the children are now getting much needed medical attention and nutrition.
Salma is a 4 year-old girl from Bagamoyo. She has cerebral palsy, is non-verbal and has severe physical disabilities. She can’t walk or sit properly. She also has difficulties eating and was lacking sufficient nutrition. She lives with her brother and single mother. Her committed mother is her full-time caregiver and has no family support – therefore, she is not able to work regularly and make any meaningful income.
With the support of a dedicated Bagamoyo community member who has been helping out several of the kids, we arranged for Salma and her mom to go for hospital check-ups and physiotherapy. We provided funds for medical bills and medications, as well as food supplies and clothing. Salma has been gaining weight and is now doing regular exercises – the doctors are satisfied with her progress and have stated that she is out of the most critical stage. Her mother is grateful to get recognized in her struggles, and to receive some much-needed support to provide for her children.
Rehema’s mum is a single mother without income as well. Being only 18 years old, she is struggling to fully support her one-and-a-half year old child. Rehema also has complex disabilities – she has cerebral palsy, is non-verbal, has low muscle strength, and is unable to sit up, crawl, or walk. We arranged for medical examinations and subsidies for food as the mother has no additional support and also can’t work due to being a full time caregiver.
With the help of generous supporters, we’ve been able to support the girls to get them in a more stable condition within the past months. We plan to collectively figure out a good path forward to assist the young mothers – as well as the other families we’ve been helping out – in supporting their children in the years to come.
